Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903) was a French Post-Impressionist artist who was not well appreciated until after his death. Gauguin was later recognized for his experimental use of color and synthetist style that were distinguishably different from Impressionism. His work was influential to the French avant-garde and many modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Gauguin’s art became popular after his death; partially from the efforts of art dealer Ambroise Vollard who organized exhibitions of his work late in his career, as well as assisting in organizing two important posthumous exhibitions in Paris. Many of his paintings were in the possession of Russian collector Sergei Shchukin as well as other important collections.

Children started a club “From the root to the highest leaf”

A club “From the root to the highest leaf” was formed at “Lyuben Karavelov” Regional Library. The idea of the club is for the participants to develop skills for solving tasks in the field of genealogy (family history) and to apply in practice the acquired knowledge through modern technologies.

During the first meeting the twelve participants got to know each other and were assigned a task to make a genealogical survey by collecting information about the names, occupations and place of birth of their family members. The participants learned about ways to collect the necessary information: through interviews, work with archival documents, local history studies, books on Bulgarian traditions, customs and rituals. The children learned that they can find information about the origin and meaning of their name in the Dictionary of Bulgarian Personal and Family Names. They were introduced to the different ways of making a family tree and looked through the family trees of Vasil Levski, Baba Tonka and the characters from Homer's Odyssey among others.

After that the participants in the club presented the stories of their own families. They told interesting stories of ancestors who fought in the 20^th century wars; ancestors who moved to Bulgaria from Hungary; stories about Christmas family traditions and customs.

The participants in the club started making their own online family tree using the collected information.

The next club meeting will take place on February 24, 2018. The participants have the task to select family photos and to tell a curious story related to one of them. They will learn how to digitalise and edit the documents so that they can present them in a family digital album.

The activity of club “From the root to the highest leaf” takes place within the framework of project “Seekers of Knowledge”, which is implemented under the “Knowledge and Growth” Programme of Ruse Free Spirit City Foundation, with the support of Econt Foundation.
