Folk Costume Day was celebratred today in Ruse – an event dedicated to the upcoming Christian holiday Sirni Zagovezni. This was the culmination of project “Studying and Promoting Bulgarian Folk traditions and Festive Rituals by Celebrating Folk Costume Day“, implemented by Association School Board “Friedrich Schiller”, financed under the “Knowledge and Growth” Programme of Ruse Free Spirit City Foundation, implemented with the support of Econt Foundation.
The Folk Costume Day started with an attractive procession of kukeri under the sound of authentic Bulgarian bells, with the participation of children and parents. The celebration was opened by Mrs Ventsislava Nikolova – Chairman of the Managing Board of Econt Foundation and by Mrs Elena Minkova – Executive Director of Ruse Free Spirit City Foundation. The Deputy Mayor for European Development of Ruse Municipality Mr Strahil Karapchanski was official guest of the event. On behalf of the Mayor of Ruse Municipality Mr Plamen Stoilov, Deputy Mayor Karapchanski presented the principal of “Friedrich Schiller” German Language School Mrs Iskra Ivanova with a congratulatory address. The celebration gathered hundreds of students from schools in Ruse Region, their teachers and parents.
Minutes after the official opening the guests had the opportunity to see exhibitions of kukeri masks and household items. A presentation of authentic folk costumes took place at the Kaneff Center hall.
The winners in the student competitions for kuker masks and literary works with theme “Forgiveness” received their awards.
Thanks to the culinary skills of the parents, the guests had the opportunity to enjoy traditional Bulgarian cuisine prepared for Sirni Zagovezni thanks to the culinary skills of the parents. Groups performing authentic folklore from the community centres from the villages of Semerdzhievo, Nikolovo, Chilnov, Tsenovo and Byala also contributed to the festive atmosphere.
